The purpose of the National Junior Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service in the school and community, to promote leadership and to model for others to emulate.
The Shikellamy Middle School Faculty Committee will choose members for the Shikellamy Middle School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society after the conclusion of the third quarter for all seventh grade students who have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 92% through 6th grade and the first three quarters of 7th grade. The Faculty Committee will select students who are scholastically eligible but also demonstrated outstanding performance in the other areas of selection: Leadership, Character, Service and Citizenship. Students must attend Shikellamy Middle School for one semester to be eligible for membership. After the grades are determined, letters of qualification will be distributed to the eligible students. After the applications are returned, then the faculty committee will review them and announce the students selected. It must be understood that GPA’s are not the only qualification for admission to NJHS; the student must also excel in leadership, character, service and citizenship. NJHS is not a club but an organization that recognizes those students who excel not only in the classroom but also in the community as one who contributes to the welfare of others.
The advisors are Mrs. Lindy Witmer (witmerl@shikbraves.org) and Mr. Craig Specht (spechtc@shikbraves.org). During the year, members must acquire a minimum of 20 community hours. Activities for community service will be organized as a group in the school and also can be acquired on the students own time after school hours. A letter verifying such hours needs to be submitted to either advisor. The number of hours obtained as a group will be announced at the first meeting.
