Meet Mrs. Knopp

Parent Letter
Mrs. Knopp

Dear Parents or Guardians,

Hello!  My name is Mrs. Knopp.  I will be your son's or daughter’s 8th grade Communication Arts teacher.  I believe that you are a vital ingredient in your child’s successful education; therefore, I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself and give you information about what your child will be learning this year.

This school year begins my 13th year teaching in the Shikellamy School District.  During my first five years I taught sixth grade Communication Arts. I then moved to seventh grade Reading for one year, but when the schools combined I taught 7th and 8th grade Language Arts for a year. Now this is my seventh year teaching only 8th grade Communication Arts.  This year I am also teaching a Reading Lab, designed to enrich students' reading and writing abilities.  I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, and I am certified in secondary English and Communications.  I enjoy reading, shopping, camping, playing with my young daughters, and hanging out with my husband.  I love teaching, and I hope that your child is as excited to be back to school as I am.

This year we will face challenges, but 8th grade is a real educational adventure. We will be challenged with individual chromebooks, new schedules, curriculum, and new programs, plus Communication Arts incorporates all facets of English into one class.  These challenges also make 8th grade an adventure.  It's an exciting time to be a student and a teacher.  I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to teach your child.  It is my firm belief that a comprehensive English education is necessary for educational and vocational success in today’s world.  This class will have the goal of exceeding the expectations laid out in the new Common Core standards.  It is my desire that you will join your students in learning and be active in their progress throughout the year.

Your student will receive a course description during the first full week of school, and he or she should bring them home.  The course description will hopefully answer any questions you or your child may have about the class.  The description will outline all the different facets of this class.  I would appreciate if you would review this with your child.  After you and your child have reviewed the description, please sign and return it.  This way if there are any questions about expectations, we can recall the contents of the description.

I also feel that it is important for you to be aware of your child’s progress throughout the school year; therefore, I will send home periodic progress reports.  You may also check your child’s grades through PowerSchool Parent Portal at http://powerschool.shikbraves.org.

I have no doubt that this is going to be an amazing school year for both the students and myself.  I am excited to have the honor and privilege of educating your most beloved treasure—for that is truly what a child is.  If you have any questions feel free to contact me by phone at the school at (570) 286-3736 before or after school hours or by email at knoppj@shikbraves.org.  You may also access the course description, weekly classroom activities, weekly homework listing, and tentative test or due dates at the school website.

                                                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                                               Mrs. Jessica J. Knopp
