Course Offerings





Band

 

Concert Band – Open to all instrumentalists or students wanting to learn an instrument.  Students are expected to perform in three concerts per year, graduation and attend sectional lessons.  The concert band and marching band merge together during the second semester to create a larger concert band.

 

Band – This class is for students who participate in marching band only.  Students are expected to perform at all football games, several competitions, parades as well as the expectations listed above for concert band.  The marching band and the concert band merge together during the second semester to create a larger concert band.

 

Jazz Band – This group is open to anyone wishing to perform jazz music.  This is not a scheduled class.  This group meets at a time most convenient for the majority of its members.

 

 

Performance Opportunities

 

Susquehanna Valley Band (SVB) – open to all HS band members.  Students must audition on a short excerpt of a solo written specifically for that instrument (same as District Solo), perform the chromatic scale and percussion must perform certain rudiments.  Percussion must audition solo excerpts on two of the following three instruments: snare, timpani, mallets.

 

District Band – open to all HS band members.  Students must audition on a short excerpt of a solo written specifically for that instrument (same as SVB solo,) perform the chromatic scale, perform 2 other regular scales, percussion must perform specified rudiments and the student must sight read a small excerpt.  Percussion must audition on all three of the following: snare, timpani and mallets.  These auditions are similar to the auditions we do for chair placement. 

 

Students will then audition at District Band for participation in Region Band based on the music being performed at Districts.  If a student qualifies for Region Band, they will then audition at Region Band for All State Band based on the music being performed at Regions.  If an underclassmen qualifies for All State, they may become eligible for All East Band based on the State rotation and chair placement at auditions held at the All State festival based on the music being performed.

 



Music Courses

 

Music TheoryThis course is open to any student who wishes to learn to read music.  Students will work in the piano lab, using music-training software and piano keyboards.  By the end of the course, students will be able to play a piano piece using two hands.  Students will learn to play the guitar using standards lead-sheets and will learn to read rhythms using percussion instruments.  An introduction to music composition will be included.  This course is recommended for beginners or those who play by ear but would like to learn to read music.

 

HarmonyThis course is designed to accommodate the more experienced musician.  The student should have had some formal instruction either in band, piano lessons, or Music Theory Class.  Fundamental writings of key signatures, time signatures, chords, intervals, melodies, and chord progressions are drilled daily using both teacher and computer assisted methods.  As skills develop, more advanced study of chord structure including 7th and 9th chords, inversions, rules for harmonic construction, and chord progressions will be introduced.  Writing one's own composition will be a final project.

 

 

 

Chorus/Choir/Vocal Ensembles

 

Mrs. Rhinard will usually audition students to determine which group you should be in prior to signing up for classes.

 

ChorusThe chorus is a unique singing group available to female students only.  Placement in this group is by audition.  Students will benefit from ensemble singing, vocalization, breathing exercises, and sight-singing practice.  Students will perform for school and community functions.  Concert dress is required for members.  Attendance at performances is part of the grading process

 

ChoirThe choir is a singing group of mixed male and female singers.  Placement in this group is by audition.  Students will benefit from ensemble singing, vocalization, breathing exercises, and sight-singing practice.  Students will perform for school and community functions.  Concert dress is required for members.  Attendance at performances is part of the grading process.


 

Vocal TechniquesThis course is open to any student wishing to improve their singing technique.  It is recommended for Choir and Chorus members.  The elements of vocal production, specific exercises for improving the voice, and methods of overcoming self-consciousness when performing will be included.  Art songs, folksongs, and vocal Jazz technique will be learned by participants.

 

Chamber Ensemble – This ensemble is through audition only and meets after school.  This ensemble performs vocal music meant for small choirs.

 

Vocal Jazz Ensemble – This ensemble is through audition and meets after school.  This ensemble performs vocal jazz literature.
